Privacy Policy for Context Engine
Last Updated: July 2025
We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how Context Engine ("we", "our", or "the extension")
collects, uses, and safeguards your information when you use our browser extension.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Web Page Content
Context Engine extracts and processes visible text content from web pages you visit when you explicitly request analysis
or when auto-capture is enabled. This includes text, headings, links, and metadata from the current page.
1.2 User Queries
We collect the questions and queries you submit to the extension to provide responses and maintain conversation context.
1.3 API Keys
If you provide an LLM API key (such as for OpenAI), we store this locally in your browser's secure storage.
Important: All collected data is stored locally on your device by default. No data is sent to our servers.
2. How We Use Your Information
The information we collect is used exclusively for:
- Extracting and processing web page content to provide AI-powered assistance
- Maintaining conversation context for follow-up questions
- Sending content to third-party LLM providers (like OpenAI) when you make queries
- Improving the functionality and user experience of the extension
3. Data Storage and Security
3.1 Local Storage
Context Engine uses your browser's IndexedDB and local storage to store:
- Extracted web page content
- Conversation history
- User preferences and settings
- API keys (encrypted when possible)
3.2 Third-Party Services
When you use the extension with an LLM API key, your queries and relevant page content are sent to the configured
LLM provider (e.g., OpenAI) to generate responses. This transmission is subject to the privacy policy of the LLM provider.
3.3 Data Retention
Data stored locally is retained until:
- You manually clear it using the extension's settings
- Storage limits are reached, triggering automatic cleanup of oldest data
- You uninstall the extension
4. Your Rights and Controls
You have full control over your data:
- View Data: You can view stored content through the extension's interface
- Delete Data: You can clear all stored data through the extension's settings
- Control Capture: You can enable/disable automatic content capture
- API Key Management: You can add, change, or remove your LLM API key at any time
5. Permissions
Context Engine requires the following permissions:
- activeTab: To access content on the current tab
- storage: To store extracted content and settings
- scripting: To run content extraction scripts
- tabs: To access tab information and content
- sidePanel: To display the extension interface
